Rokytnice nad Jizerou (formerly Rochlitz in German) is one of the places of the Giant Mountains that was settled in the middle of the 16th century. The village was founded around 1574 and got its name from the Huťský potok (brook). Originally called "Rokytnice" by the adjective "rokytná", which means water flowing between willows.

Rokytnice offers you a wealth of marked hiking trails to the peaks of our beautiful Giant Mountains such as Lysa hora, Kotel, Zlate navrsi or the Elbe spring. For less proficient we recommend a trip to the Huťský waterfall, the Dvoračky mountain chalet or the Stráž rocky hill.

Huťský Waterfall is the closest destination from our cottage. In the past, the waterfall was a popular tourist destination. Water falls from the height of 20 m in the Hut Waterfall, it is fed by the Huťský Stream, which springs under the Dvoračky chalet. The Huťský was named according to the first glassworks in the Giant Mountains, where the well-known Schürer glass family worked since 1562. Later, after the depletion of wood in the surrounding forests, the glassworks stopped their work and since 1625 with the support of Albrecht of Wallenstein were silver and copper mined. After Valdštejn's death, mining activity was going down and later stopped at all.

The Strážník rock lookout offers a beautiful view not only of Rokytnice, but also of Studenov, Lysá hora and Kotel. Stráž Hill is one of the guarding hills from which the surrounding villages were to be warned in the past by the enemy's invasion. Such a fire message was to be taken from the mountains through the Kozakov Hill to a wide area and to the center of Bohemia. When you come to the lookout point, you are only 4 meters below the top of Stráž Hill (782 meters above sea level). The view is secured with chains and offers a wonderful view. There are benches, a table and an information board with a description of the views

This very light trail suitable for walk or bicycle taking you to the picturesque part of Rokytnice - Františkov. Through the field road you can get to the "Old Cowshed" in Františkov, which today functions as a museum and gallery where you can see a number of interesting exhibits from the history of Františkov and from the lives of local residents. The thematic trail is dedicated to the traditional “Dřevosochání” (making the sculpture from wood) cultural event held in Františkov June/July. 4 differnet places will give you a lot of information on the history of "Woodcutting" and see a variety of wooden sculptures with your own eyes.

Dvoračky mountain chalet (Hofbaude in German) is at an altitude of 1140 meters between Lysá hora and Kotel. The original name was Rokytenské dvorské boudy. A significant trade route called the Czech, known already in the 10th century, which passed through Rokytnice and across the Labská louka to Silesia, rose around Dvoračky. Dvoračky were built in 1707 by the Schier family and originally it was a mountain farm for cows in the surrounding large meadows. In March 1893, the original house burned down and Count Harrach bought the burnt house and converted it into a frequently visited inn. In 1921, during land reform, it was handed over to the state and was leased to the Czech family of Puhonny, which later bought it. Since 1993, the Stara family has been operating at Dvoracky, which has also built a new Stumpovka. Today Dvoračky is visited for their home bakery, home cooking and mountain specialties served in the stylish restaurant and on the large terrace

Kotel - boiler

The Kotel Mountain was formerly called The Hoof. It is 1435 meters high and is considered one of the most beautiful mountain in the whole Giant Mountains. Southeastern cliffs fall into the glacial double carriage of the Kotel Pits. On the slopes of Kotle there are first-republic bunkers (řopíky). On the slope of Kotel there is also Růženčina zahrádka (Rosa garden), a stone wall in the shape of a rose petal. The origin of this dike is still a mystery - it could serve to grow medicinal herbs or as a cult place of prehistoric people. The site was formerly nicknamed Lung-Schwamm, which is the name given to the popular name of the healing lichen of Icelandic, which used to be abundant here. The new name was invented by Count Bedřich Harrach in honor of his wife, Countess Rosa. Kotel pits are state nature reservation on the southern slopes of the mountain. It is formed by the glacial caves Velká and Malá kotelní jáma in the southern and south-eastern slopes of Kotel. A large boiler pit is glacially excavated in a granite, a small one in a clamp. Kotel pits belong to the first, so strictly protected zone

The name is the translation of the original German Goldhöhe. The older Czech name for this plain clamped ridge was Krkonoš, one of the oldest Czech names in the area, which also gave the name to the whole mountain range. Together with Kotel and Lysá hora they form the three most distinctive mountains of the western Giant Mountains. The highest point is the Harrach stones (1421 m above sea level). On Easter, March 24, 1913, an international 50 km ski race took place around the Golden Hill. He started out in beautiful weather (the riders only ran "lightly" dressed), but the weather turned into hell. The race had to be canceled and all racers except Bohumil Hanč were stopped.His friend, the skier Václav Vrbata, went to help him. But they both perished in a sudden blizzard. A mound was built in memory of Bohumil Hanč and his friend Václav Vrbata, who died tragically near here. In the summer months, the bus from Rokytnice nad Jizerou to Mísečky is operating and from there directly on the Golden Hill (1411 m above sea level) to Vrbata chalet


Pančavský vodopád - Pančava waterfall

Pančavský Waterfall is the highest waterfall in the Czech Republic, its total height is 145 meters. The flow of the Pančava stream leaves the Pančava meadow and falls into the Labský důl (mine). The name of the Pančavský creek coming from the German pantschen. The current access to the waterfall is limited as it is located in zone I of the National Park of "Krkonoše". Near the waterfall there is a viewpoint, from which you can see only the uppermost part of the waterfall, another very limited view provides Ambrose's view.

Our mountains - the Krkonoše Mountains and the people living here - also made a small contribution to this expansion.

Pramen Labe - Elbe spring

Extensive plain Labská louka with Elbe spring. This spring was symbolically consecrated by Bishop Jan of Talemberk in Hradec Králové in 1684, and thus the Elbe Meadow became definitely Czech territory. The symbolic spring of the Elbe is provided with a concrete ring. But the real Elbe spring is a little higher in the peat bog between the pine forest. On the southeast edge of Labská louka, the Elbe creates a 45 m high Elbe waterfall. In 1968, a modification of the Elbe spring was made and a metal plate with names of all cities through which the Elbe flows was installed

Snow pits (German Schneegruben, Polish Śnieżne Kotły) are the most perfect glacial bushes of the Polish Giant Mountains. It is divided into a large and small Snow Pit, which is separated by a rock comb. The Great Snow Pit is 800 meters long and more than 200 meters deep, the Little Snow Pit is only 550 meters long. The Śnieżne Stawki Lake is located at the bottom of the Great Snow Pit and the Mlaka Lake drying out in summer. The red-marked ridge of the Czech-Polish Friendship leads around the Great Snow Pit and offers many breathtaking views.
